Mike Nash from the Windows Vista product team has just announced on the Windows Vista blog that Windows Vista SP1 has been RTM’d (Released to Manufacturing). I’ve been running Windows Vista SP1 RC1 for the last little while and it doesn’t seem to have really cured the file handling issues.

One of the amusing things in Nash’s announcement went like this:

SP1 also includes changes focused on improving the performance of Windows Vista in areas that impact the customer experience the most. For instance, with SP1, copying or moving files around your PC, your home network or your corporate network should now be much faster — up to 50% faster in some scenarios (according to our internal tests).

Really? Fifty-percent faster than what?!?. Ok let’s start at an arbitrary number of say, 100. This is my file handling speed in XP and W2K3. Now Vista slows things down by 50% to 50 (it’s actually worse in real life). Now, performance is increased by 50% to 75. Hey, guess what? It’s still slower than XP and W2K3!! Ah, the dangers of talking in percentages.

Like seriously, when I ask an OS to delete a folder, just delete the damned folder. Don’t sit there “discovering”… or “calculating”…just delete my damned folder.

I had no file move/copy/delete issues whatsoever in XP and Windows Server 2003.
